Amazon, Apple, Google and the Zigbee Alliance become part of the "Project Connected Home over IP", a Working Group that pursues the development and promotion of a new connectivity standard, keeping security as a fundamental design principle.

Which is the goal of the Project Connected Home over IP?

The ultimate goal of the Working Group is to facilitate the development of devices to manufacturers and its' adoption to consumers. To reach that, the different players will work together on the development of an Internet Protocol (IP) that will enhance the communication between smart devices, mobile apps and the cloud.

Who is on board and how will it work?

Amazon, Apple, Google and board members from companies of the Zigbee Alliance like IKEA, Legrand, NXP Semiconductors, Resideo, Samsung SmartThings, Schneider Electric, Signify (formerly Philips Lighting), Silicon Labs, Somfy, and Wulian will provide their accumulated experiences on the smart home market to develop the new connectivity standard. The standard will be based on the Internet Protocol because of security, infrastructural and accessibility reasons. The Wi-Fi and Bluetooth that we all have at home are just two examples of IP-based technologies.

How will the project impact on consumers?

A successful outcome of the project will translate on enhanced customer experiences. Devices belonging to different ecosystems like Amazon, Apple or Google will be able to talk to each other and to be commanded by your preferred voice assistant either it is Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant. For current smart home owners, you may be also interested in knowing that Amazon, Apple and Google have shared their commitment on supporting users with their products.
