We classify the technologies that interoperate within a smart home into five main application groups: Energy & Lighting, Health & Prevention, Home Appliances, Home Entertainment and, last but not least, Security & Safety.

  • What is Energy & Lighting?

It is the application group composed by those technologies designed to heat and cool an environment (such as heaters, air conditioners, thermostats and fans), technologies designed to monitor and control the gas and electricity consumption (like energy meters), technologies to illuminate a space (like bulbs and LED stripes), and also technologies to make or break an electrical circuit (such as switches and plugs).

  • What is Health & Prevention?

It is the application group composed of those technologies that both directly (through humans) and indirectly (through the environment) monitor or influence our health level. Examples of health & prevention products are blood pressure monitors, human scales, fitness & activity trackers, sleep trackers, toothbrushes but also air quality trackers, air purifiers and humidifiers.

  • What is Home Appliances?

It is the application group composed of those technologies designed to support us on our household activities. Some of the home appliances that have become smart are coffee makers, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, cookers and lawnmowers.

  • What is Home Entertainment?

It is the application group composed of those technologies designed to access digital contents and also to share them across different devices. Within the home entertainment technologies, we find TVs, speakers, voice assistants, hubs and streaming stickers.

  • What is Security & Safety?

It is the application group composed of those technologies designed to prevent intentional attacks and unexpected incidents. Some of the available security and safety technologies are alarm systems, smoke detectors, video doorbells, leak detectors, cameras and door locks.
